FYNN, Micheal & Winnifred Mitchell

Luck had it that a Fynn great-aunt set out the basics of the Fynn family:

County Galway, Republic of Ireland shown in green on west coast.

County Galway, Republic of Ireland shown in green on west coast.

“Irishman Micheal Fynn was born in 1808, County Galway. Came to Canada with others of family and settled in Nova Scotia. He died in 1893 (85yrs). He worked down east for a man called Mcdonald, who gave him 200 acres of land in lieu of wages, this became the Fynn farm in Westmeath Township.  He married Winnifred Mitchell from County Rosscomman, Ireland, she came to Canada with 3 sisters, Ann, (married to Charles  Brown), Ellen and Bridget Mitchell, (all lived on Fynn farm).

Micheal and Winnifred had 4 sons – John,  Micheal, Patrick and Edward. Patrick died at age 14.

Edward married Janet McGregor of McGregor’s Hill (west of Pembroke). Their family consisted of 7 children Anna,  Muriel, Micheal, James, Patrick, Mabel and Herbert (writer’s grandfather). James married Eleura Morrison (5 children). Micheal married Betty Brown (1 child). Patrick married Gertrude Walsh (7 children) Hebert married E. Gervais (3 children).”

Further luck has it that the family’s ancestry, compiled by Graham Lyttle and Don Fynn, has been submitted to this website: Fynn Family Descendants Report. They also have generously sent the family photos used here.

In the Archives of New Brunswick is a 1834 passenger manifest of the ship “Trafalgar” listing one Micheal Fenny, aged 27.  Might that be Micheal Fynn?

1871 Census, Westmeath Township - Fynn Household

1871 Census, Westmeath Township – Fynn Household.  Micheal’s wife Winnifred Mitchell had her sister Bridget Mitchell is living on the farm.

It should be noted that the Mitchell women -Winnifred’s sisters  – were an integral part of the Fynn household. Anne Mitchell m. Charles Brown, while spinsters Bridget Mitchell and Ellen Mitchell remained in the Fynn Household. Winnifred’s sons John & Micheal also did not marry so this was a household of many single adults.
