ROBINSON, John Good and Margaret Hawthorne
“Immigrant Ancestors” James Robinson (1810-1887) and Margaret Good (1815-1887) were married in 1833. James, the son of Thomas Robinson and Jane Wilson, was born in 1808 in Gartinardress Estate, Killeshandra, County Cavan, Ireland. He would die a world away in 1887 in Maple Leaf, Hastings County, Ontario. Mary Margaret Good was born in 1816, also in Gartinardress Estate, Killeshandra, Co. Cavan, Ireland. They are both buried in the Emmanuel Cemetery at Maynooth, Ont.
[An extensively researched genealogy of this family was produced by Fay Bennett for the late Gordon Robinson and is generously offered here by his widow Verla Collins Robinson: Robinson Ancestor Genealogy. Verla has also generously submitted photographs and writings to this entry.]
Children from this marriage of James and Margaret Robinson were:
1. John Good Robinson (1836-1915) married Margaret Hawthorne (1837-1918) in 1858. John Good Robinson was born at North Gower, Carleton County, and would be the first of the family to settle in Westmeath Township. John was also known as John T. Robinson. John T. and Margaret Hawthorne, are buried at Beachburg Union Cemetery.
A “picturesque” outline of this family was written by Desmond Robinson in 1982: Desmond Robinson’s 1982 Robinson Family History
Margaret was the daughter of Robert Hawthorne (1818-1903) and (1) Martha Ingram ( -1841) and stepmother (2) Ann Nancy Code (1813-1905) of Leinster Province, Ireland who married widower Robert in 1848 and Ann Code Hawthorne is also buried at Beachburg Union Cemetery. Ann’s parents John Code (1792-1848) and Elizabeth Powers (1790-1851) had sailed to the New World in 1816 and had settled in Drummond Township, Lanark County. They are buried there.
Margaret’s mother illness and subsequent death on the journey across the North Atlantic is well captured by the obituary writer at Margaret’s father’s death – Robert Hawthorn Sr. – in 1903.
A number of John Good Robinson and Margaret Hawthorne Robinson’s children were long-lived and three went west to homestead in Manitoba.
The children are:
i. Robert William Robinson (1859-1943), a farmer, married Sarah Ann Richardson (1858- ), daughter of William John Richardson and Mary Couche, in 1884 in Beachburg, Ontario. The marriage ended in separation.
“Robert William lived on a farm by the millstream in Forster’s Falls. He quarreled with his wife when they were fairly young and he never forgave her. He refused to live with her or speak to her during the last half of their lives. When he was 84, he heard that his wife was dying in Beachburg and thought he should go and see her. He drove to Beachburg in a horse and cutter through a blinding blizzard but he refused to stay there till the storm had passed. During the journey home due to the old man being half blind and the severity of the storm the horse got off the road and bogged down in the snow. The old man was half frozen and died of exposure within a few days of his wife.” – taken from Desmond Robinson’s 1982 Robinson History.

AN EXCELLENT VIDEO: Gordon and Verla Robinson became the subjects of a wonderful video by Alan Soucie now available on YouTube. Take the time to watch “An Ottawa Valley Farming Story Featuring Gord & Verla Robinson” as it shows the humanity of this couple and the family’s transition out of full-time family farming that so many township people have experienced. Thank you to Alan for giving permission for its use here.
