REID, Norman and Phoebe Tucker Reid

A Reid property, that stood for many years, was a white house at the end of an exceptionally lovely sand beach on Hennessy Bay, off the Ottawa River’s Coulonge Lake. The interior of the house was finished with the set of lumber floors and mantels. They were shopkeepers in Westmeath Village. That home then was owned by Gordon and Nancy Hooper and they named the place Nan-gor, combining their names. Nangor Beach continues to be used by locals, but the Reid house has been replaced with a new home.

Norman Reid Store, Westmeath Village

The store in Westmeath served a large area – with Allumette Islanders coming across Lower Allumette Lake to trade and shop.. The store like most in that era, bought goods from the local area farmers and business to supply its stock.
